Flora & Fauna

🌳 Native Trees & Shrubs

🌿 Mānuka – pioneer shrub, attracts native insects.

🌿 Kānuka – taller cousin of mānuka, regenerates bush.

🌳 Pūriri – supports birdlife with fruit and flowers.

🌳 Kōwhai – bright yellow flowers, loved by tūī.

🌴 Ponga (Tree Fern) – iconic NZ forest understorey.

🌲 Kahikatea – NZ’s tallest native tree, prefers wetlands.

🌾 Harakeke (Flax) – supports native birds and weaving.


🐦 Native Birds

🐦 Tūī – nectar-feeder with melodic song.

🕊️ Kererū (Wood Pigeon) – spreads seeds of large-fruited trees.

🐥 Pīwakawaka (Fantail) – active insect hunter with fan tail.

🐤 Riroriro (Grey Warbler) – one of the smallest native birds.

🦜 Kākā – rare native parrot, heard screeching overhead.

🦉 Ruru (Morepork) – NZ’s only native owl, calls at night.

🦎 Skinks – native ground-dwellers found in sunny patches.

🦎 Geckos – often nocturnal and patterned.

🐸 Hochstetter’s frog (possibly present nearby) – a nationally vulnerable species.

🐜 Wētā – ancient insect, found in logs and trees.

🐞 Huhu beetles & grubs – native decomposers.

🦋 Monarch butterflies – supported by swan plants.

🐝 Native bees – small and solitary, important pollinators.

🪰 NZ Giant Dragonfly (Kapokapowai) – lives near streams.

Pest & Stream Care

We support a range of pest control methods designed to be safe, effective, and community friendly.


🐭 Common Pests

🐀 Rats – Predators of eggs, chicks, and native insects. Extremely destructive.

🐁 Mice – Small but numerous, competing for food and damaging seedlings.

🐾 Possums – Eat native leaves, flowers, and bird eggs, major forest defoliators.

🦦 Stoats – Fast, cunning hunters that kill birds and lizards.

🧰 Trap Tips

  • Use peanut butter or dried rabbit as bait.
